We Had A Great Week of Special Visitors!

Reading Buddies:

On Monday, our new third grade reading buddies from Mrs. LaDuke's class visited! The children so enjoyed the books of poetry they brought to share with us. In our conversations, the children found out many things that they have in common with the third graders. The children have already begun talking about what they want to read to their new third grade buddies on the next visit!

New friends were made with the third graders!

Siblings, Jonathan and Kathryn enjoyed reading together!

Science:

This week in Science, we have been focusing on learning about the heart. On Thursday, Mrs. Peck brought several cow hearts to the Science Resource Center. She dissected them and the children were able to see the four chambers and the valves. This was a great way to help them understand how the heart works.

Mrs. Peck explains the four chambers of the heart and how they function.

After dissection!

Shannon and Julia get a close-up look at the valves and chambers!

On Friday, Lauren E.'s dad (Dr. Jay) brought Mr. Bones to visit. While he taught us many new things about our skeleton and our bodies, he was amazed as well at the knowledge the children already had!

Parent Reader:

Erin R. read the books Room on the Broom and Mice and Beans to our class as Friday's Parent Reader. She and Shannon then surprised us and gave the books to our class! We will enjoy them many times over! Thank you!

  • Tuesday - Art - Jill Emerson (12:05)
  • Thursday - Science Resource Center - Kerry Kriseman (12:00)

The Halloween Parade will begin at 8:30 on Friday, October 30! Please send in play clothes for your child to change into after the parade. Uniforms are not required! Right after the Parade, we will change into our play clothes. Then we will celebrate Julia's birthday with a special snack! At 10:00 a.m. the children will be dismissed to the Fall Festival. They will not be required to have a parent with them in order to go to the Festival. Please be at the classroom by 10:00 if you are going to be escorting your child to the festival. There will be a sign-out sheet outside the classroom for you to sign when you are taking your child whether at 10:00 or at the end of the festival. Their costumes will be in a paper bag on their desks for you to take with you when you leave for the day. Please remember to take their green bags as well.

Happy Halloween!

Special Visits and Visitors!

Last Friday, October 9, our class enjoyed several skits on conversational skills. These were performed by 6th graders, including Samuel's sister, Jordan. We learned how important our "tone" is in getting the right "message" across in conversation.

Birthdays are special days in first grade! This week we had the first two birthdays in our class! We celebrated both Oliver and Russ turning 7! Happy Birthday!!!

On Tuesday, Kay Bronstein, visited our class as our first "picture lady" this year. The children learned about french painter, Henri Rousseau. She brought his painting from 1909, "Notre Dame".

Dear Parents,

I have posted many more photo albums filled with wonderful pictures of my students to my Teacher Page in the Shorecrest On-line Community. Check them out! You can download them as well. I will continue to post pictures there throughout the school year.

Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Friday, October 16, due to a Professional Development Day for teachers.

Thursday - Science Resource Center - Stephanie Bottoni and Jodie Gayoso
Thursday - Library Check-out - Fai MacDougald

Specials!

We are so lucky to have so many wonderful opportunities at Shorecrest! Each week, the children have four 30 minute PE classes, two 30 minute Spanish classes, one 45 minute Music class, one 45 minute Art class, and one 45 minute visit to the Science Resource Center. Every other week, we have a 45 minute Computer Lab and a 45 minute Library lesson. In addition, we visit the library each week to check-out books. Computer Lab with Mrs. Baralt is a favorite "special" for all of us! Here we were learning to use the Super Grouper tool in Kidspiration 3 to create venn diagrams.

Another Busy Week We Had!

Hailey's mom was our parent reader on Friday afternoon. This is definitely a highlight of the week for the children. Thank you ALL for modeling the love of reading with our class!

This week we began learning about the brain in our Human Body science unit. On Thursday, Lisa Peck, our favorite UD science teacher, brought real sheep brains to the Science Resource Center to share with us! We learned how the central nervous system works throughout our body. As a first grader, we have full size human brains which weigh about 3 pounds! Our brain communicates with every cell of our body. The human body is amazing!
