Week of March 26, 2012

Dear Parents:

Relay week is here! The children may wear purple shirts all week - even on Friday for our field trip to the Dali! Please just make sure your child looks "neat" on Friday.

Today we had a special visitor in our class. Hannah Stein, a senior at Shorecrest, was a guest author in our classroom during Writing Workshop! She read a book that she and her brother actually wrote and published titled "It's More than Just the Shoes and The Hair". They wrote it for children as a guide to what school is like. What a great opportunity for the children to meet and listen to a real student author from Shorecrest! What better motivator could there be? At the end of Hannah's visit, she autographed a copy of her book and presented it to our class!

This will be another busy week at school, especially Friday! That morning will begin with a Relay for Life whole school assembly and then lap around the track together. Unlike last week, we will be eating lunch early as we will be leaving for the Salvador Dali Museum at approximately 11:35. Our tour begins at 12:00 and we will return to school about 1:15. At 2:00 we will celebrate Caelin's birthday!

Also this week:

Reading Workshop/Language Arts:
Our spelling focus is on the long e sound spelled with y or ie. In phonics, we are learning to change the y to ie before we can add the inflections -ed, -er, -est, or -es to root words ending in y. Our grammar focus will be on verbs that tell about the past. In reading workshop, we continue to look at the characters in our stories and what we can learn about them by using multiple sources of information from the text - illustrations, actions, narration, and what the character says/doesn't say.

Writing Workshop: We will continue to work on revision strategies and prepare for our celebration.

Math: We will be talking about the characteristics of 3-D solid shapes like the sphere, rectangular prism, cylindar, pyramid, and cube and explore symmetry. Then we'll take the Unit 7 assessment.

Science/Social Studies: We will finish our unit on America and begin a new unit on the best state... Florida! During this unit, we'll be learning about the various types of weather we have in Florida and about various symbols of the state. Ask your child what our state tree is. It's not just a palm tree... but a sabal palm. Also, ask your child how to say sabal palm in spanish!
