Week of April 8, 2013

Dear Parents:

Relay for Life last week was a great experience! Thank you so much for your participation!
So proud of the chain for Relay that we made because of the donations from the children!
Taking our chain with us to the athletic center for the opening ceremony for Relay for Life!
Here we are at the opening ceremony for Relay for Life!
If you have pictures from Relay to share, please do!

Last week, the children enjoyed using digital cameras during computer lab. The children were paired with partners and we took a scavenger hunt around campus with the cameras. Mrs. Baralt gave them a list of spanish adjectives. They had to find something to take a picture of for each word, i.e. a red flower for "rojos" or a little bug for "pequeno". It was amazing to see how many adjectives they could identify in spanish! Gracias, Senor Zamoff! It was a lot of fun! Gracias, Senora Baralt!

Celebrate the Arts Week will be NEXT WEEK, April 15 - 19. We begin the week on Monday, April 15, with a field trip to the Dali Museum! There has been a time change! We will leave Shorecrest at 9:30 for a 10:00 tour. Parents are welcome to meet us there, but will need to pay for your own admission at the door. The children's admission is covered by Shorecrest. We'll have several things going on during the week, including visiting musicians, artists, and an art walk to view the work of our own Shorecrest artists. The Arts Teach-in will be on Friday, April 19 from 8:10 - 11:00. Each class will have two visiting artists. One of our artists will be Mark Gonzalez, Carson's uncle! At 11:00, there will be a musical program performed by the students. Following that we'll have a picnic lunch. Bring a blanket and pack yourself a picnic lunch to enjoy with your child! Artwork of students in EC - grade 4 will be on display.

The Upper Division musical during Celebrate the Arts week is "The Music Man". Show dates are April 18, 19, and 20 at 7:30 p.m. Box office hours are April 15 - 19 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Don't miss it! These are always amazing productions!

There is no school on Monday, April 22.

On Sunday, April 28, Shorecrest is participating in an event called Feeding Children Everywhere. Volunteers are needed from the Shorecrest community to help pack food bags in the new Athletic Center. The event is It starts at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 2:00 p.m. It's another great way for the Shorecrest community to come together to make a difference in the lives of children.

Shorecrest's Fifth Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance is just around the corner! This memorable affair, designed for girls in kindergarten through fourth grade. It offers up a DJ, games, prizes, a photo booth, dancing, a dessert bar, and refreshments for all those who love dressing fancy and hula hooping the night away! It will be held Friday, May 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Shorecrest Athletic Center. You can register for this FUNdraiser (all proceeds benefit Shorecrest Parent Association initatives) online by visiting shorecrestgala.com . Just click on the "Shop Items" link. Admission is $65 for each daddy/daughter pair and $75 for more than one daughter. Check out photos from last year by visiting http://shorecrest4dd.shutterfly.com

Friday, May 10 is our first grade program, "Commotion in the Ocean" and you don't want to miss it! It begins at 8:30 in the Janet Root Theater. As you noticed on our homework calendar today, each child needs to bring a new, clean, plain, white t-shirt to school by April 19. We will be decorating these to wear in the program!

Our last field trip will be on Tuesday, May 21. We will be going to the Florida Aquarium in Tampa. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to join us!

Monday, May 27,  is Memorial Day. There will be no school that day.

On Thursday, May 30, we will have our end of the year party beginning at 1:15. Parents are welcome to join us as always!

Friday, May 31, is the last day of school. Dismissal will be at noon.

But, before we get to the last day of school, we have a lot of learning going on! Here's a peek at what we will be doing in our classroom this week:

In Word Work, we will focus on words ending with __ng.

In Reading Workshop, as always, we'll practice word attack strategies for unfamiliar words and reading with appropriate voice inflection. We're also taking another look at non-fiction as we go back and dive deeper into non-fiction reading over the course of the next several weeks with our new ocean unit in science.

In Writing Workshop, we'll look at the way some of our mentor authors end their stories as we practice revising our endings. Stay tuned, we'll be inviting you to celebrate our work as writers who revise soon!

In math, we'll work on place value for ones, tens, and hundreds; counting money including dollars, begin to make change, and do some pretend shopping!

In social studies/science, we move from our study of Florida into our ocean unit... a perfect transition since our state is a wonderful place to experience all that the ocean has to offer! This unit is filled with rich learning experiences!

Volunteers this week:
  • Wednesday - Library Check-out - 2:10 - Sharon Cannella and Mary Hind
  • Thursday - Math game - 10:30 - Donna Main
  • Friday - Art - 9:15 - Lorraine Thorpe
  • Friday - Parent Reader - 2:15 - Twila Davis (follows Sydney's birthday celebration at 1:45!)

Have a great week!
Susan
