Dear Parents,
Throughout the year, our morning car line has worked smoothly. From 7:30-8:10 AM a team of eager patrols and teachers open doors and help children out of their cars for a steady stream of car drivers moving up to the carport, dropping off their children, and driving forward with very little wait time. I am aware that, for a number of families, the recent closing of the Progress Energy Field has disrupted their morning drop-off routine. Many of those who accessed the field for parking and walked their children over to the school have now joined the car line; however, we have also noticed that a number of drivers are parking in the front of the school or leaving their children off in front of the Lower Division front gates, causing a very unsafe situation.
The safety of our students is our first priority; therefore, at this time we ask that all of our Shorecrest families and friends use the car line drop-off in the morning and avoid parking in front of the Lower Division. We care about the safety of all our community members, and because there is no supervision, it is in everyone’s best interest to use the car line. We understand that it may be an inconvenience, but it is worth the extra time if it prevents an unnecessary accident from occurring.
Starting Tuesday, February 16, the gates at the 1st Street entrances will not be opened. I regret this change, but the safety of children is our priority. Drivers will need to use the car line. For families with morning time constraints, we encourage you to drop your child off between 7:30 and 7:45 AM. Morning care will be available. If you wish to walk your children to class, please park in one of the lots on either side of the Administration Building.

Cash for Trash!
TERRACYCLING: (Cash For Trash)
Shorecrest is collecting items which will be reused to make new items. SPA receives $.02 for each item collected. Please help us collect the following trash! It will turn into cash for Shorecrest! Look for TerraBins being placed around the school.

Get a Charge Out of Reading!
This week Shorecrest celebrates reading with our first week-long Reading Festival!
Monday - Author Visit: The students will be in an assembly with visiting author, Michael Patrick O'Neill. If you wish to order books but did not return the order form, books will still be available to order and have signed after the visit as well. I will send home new forms upon request or you can get one from Dottie Smay in the library.
Tuesday -Book Character Dress Up Day: Don't forget that this is the day that the students come dressed as a favorite book character. They should bring the book and the completed "Act It Out" book report to school. It will be such fun to see all the different book characters at our Town Meeting. Town Meeting is on Tuesday this week rather than on Monday. Please refer to the parent letter sent home earlier this week for further information.
Wednesday - Drop Everything and Read: The entire lower school will all stop and read from 8:15-8:45 on this day. What a great way to emphasize the importance of reading! You might want to help your child select a few favorite books to bring to school to read during this time.
Thursday -Afternoon Reading Festival: This begins at dismissal at the picnic tables. If your child is participating, please meet them at the picnic tables at 2:45. Help for Haiti!
As the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti is still affecting thousands of Haitians, Shorecrest has a wonderful and personal opportunity to help. LCDR Michele Overton (Mrs. Overton’s sister in-law) is a physician working on the USNS Comfort stationed off the coast of Port-au-Prince. The ship is a floating hospital treating those most severely injured from the recent earthquake. Dr. Overton is aiding in the distribution of care packages to the Haitians on board.
If you are interested, Shorecrest will make available to you a flat-rate priority mail shipping box (12” wide x 12” long x 5.5” deep), which can be filled with anything up to 70 pounds and shipped for a flat rate of $12.50 to the military address provided with your box. You can rest assured knowing that your donations will be put directly in the hands of the neediest families as they are attempting recovery aboard the ship and preparing for discharge.
How can you help?
Simply fill out and detach the form on the letter that went home last week if you wish to receive a box(es) to fill. The detachable section of the form looks like this:
If you have misplaced the form, simply send a note with the above information. We will make sure you receive the boxes you are requesting.
Once your form is received, Shorecrest will send home a box, complete with the mailing label addressed and attached, a customs form, and instructions. Your family can then fill it with items in need and take it to your local post office for shipping (at the flat rate of $12.50) by Friday, February 6. The military mail will be delivered in 2-3 days, and what a great way to KNOW your items are going directly into the hands of people who need it! Act fast! LCDR Overton will only be stationed on the USS Comfort for 45 days!

Thank you so much for writing and for wanting to help out here! You have no idea how much clothes and toys would make these people's days! We often have to cut off their clothing when we see them, so then they really have nothing. I see people getting discharged from the ship wearing scrubs and hospital socks because there's nothing else for them. Also, it's amazing that when you give a little child a toy, they just focus on it and let you pull off dressings without crying. I'm sure any size kid's shoes would work because we have lots of different ages here. Thank you again for wanting to help out...I can't tell you how much it means to me and how much it will mean to the people of Haiti!

100 Days of School!
We recently celebrated the 100th Day of School! We began the morning by inviting our 3rd grade reading buddies to read 100 books with us! The children kept track by making a tally mark on the board as partners finished reading a book together. A big cheer erupted when we finished reading 100 books!
The children enjoyed a delicious snack mix as they worked at their desks. Each child brought in 100 pieces of something such as mini-marshmallows, pretzels, and popcorn. We mixed everything together and m-m-m-m it was GOOD!
There were 10 different activities set up for the children to work at, all with the theme of 100! Can Samuel do 100 jumping jacks?
Whew! He did it!
At another station, the children worked cooperatively to use 100 pattern blocks to make incredible designs. It has been a great 100 days of school!

Math Explorations!
A recent math unit had us comparing numbers in a variety of ways. The children worked at comparing weights by using a pan balance to find sets of objects that weigh about the same.
A fun activity in our classroom is called "Greater Gator". The children use the relation symbols <, >, and = to compare money amounts, math facts, measurement units and more.
Another exploration had the children finding "area" by covering a surface with various sized units such as index cards and dominoes. The children estimated the area of a surface, covered it, and counted the units to check their estimates. They realized they sometimes needed to add half-units to complete their final count!
