Things to Remember!

Conference Day is Wednesday, September 30. There will be no school for students.

Homework should be turned in the day it is due. The word card ring should be returned to school on Thursday.

Volunteers this week:
  • Tuesday - Art - Fai MacDougald
  • Thursday - Library - Jodie Gayoso
  • Thursday - Science Resource Center - Radha Moorthy-Clink
  • Friday - Math Game - Erin Ross
  • Friday - Parent Reader - Radha Moorthy-Clink

It was a busy, but fun week!

In addition to the apple project, we had our first compliment party! The children earned 25 class compliments before the end of September! "Jim" came to our party! Jim is a puppy training to be a companion service dog. He is living with Samuel K.'s family. Check out this week's e-bytes to learn more!

This was also homecoming week! The children had a blast at the all-school Pep Rally on Friday!

Apples, Apples, Apples!

We worked on our "apple project" all week... writing number stories, graphing, learning about the seasons of the apple tree and the parts of the apple, measuring the girth and the weight of our apples, and making apple trees by painting our arms and hands. We finished the apple project by making a "tasty bug" treat to eat!

Welcome Nico!

Please join me in welcoming Nico B. to our class! Today was his first day at Shorecrest and you would have thought he had been here since August! The children all took the initiative to show him the routines of our day and to help him feel comfortable. You would have been so proud of your children.

Having said this, it is no surprise then that we have earned our first COMPLIMENT PARTY already! The children have been "catching compliments" since the first day of first grade. It took 25 compliments to earn this party. I think this is a record to have earned 25 compliments before the end of September!

Volunteers this week:
  • Tuesday - Art - Darby Jung
  • Thursday - Library Check-out - Kerri Kriseman
  • Friday - Math Game - Michael White
We will be attending the all school Homecoming Pep Rally on Friday afternoon so we will not have a Parent Reader.

Remember to send in your child's favorite apple on Wednesday! We will be using the apples for graphing activities, weighing, measuring, and even making a yummy snack with them on Friday.

Have a great week!
Susan

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

A big THANK YOU to our parent volunteers! Your children LOVE it when you volunteer and you are a tremendous help and asset!

Most of you probably know that I am a HUGE Florida Gator! I have a wonderful Gator rocker in my class that parent readers sit in to read to the children. A few years ago, when Jonathan's sister, Kathryn, was a student in my class, her dad came to read. Being a Miami Hurricane, he opted not to sit in the rocker and sat on the stool instead. So, this year at "Meet the Teacher", I kindly pointed out to him that I had painted and recovered the stool and it is now a Florida Gator stool. Where would he sit to read to the children? Well, Mr. C (Jonathan's dad) solved his problem and came prepared to volunteer as our Parent Reader on Friday!

This week's volunteers:
  • Tuesday - Art - Jodie Gayoso
  • Thursday - Library Check-out - Fai MacDougald
  • Friday - Math Games - Perry Ross
  • Friday - Parent Reader - Twila Davis
Don't forget - Picture Day is Tuesday!

Just for fun:

There will be a Lower Division Parent Workshop on "Technology in the Classroom and Training for My Community" on Friday, September 11 at 8:30 a.m. in the Student Activity Center. Anna Baralt will be able to help familiarize you with our on-line community, teacher pages, and things that we are doing with technology in the classroom.

In class this week, the spelling words will focus on the short i vowel sound. We will also begin learning about the "naming parts" of sentences, homophones, and contractions. We will complete our author study of Kevin Henkes books and continue to enjoy our time in writer's workshop. In math we will be working with the number grid and complements of ten. We will also begin our study of the Human Body in science. We will have our first visit to the Science Resource Center on Thursday!

Please remember that the word card rings which will come home tomorrow (Tuesday) need to be practiced daily and returned on Thursday. This week's words are get, hold, home, so, and soon.
