Week of April 29, 2013

Dear Parents:

A blue notice is coming home today with your child regarding our last field trip of the year to the Florida Aquarium. Please be sure to read it carefully and return the bottom portion to school no later than Friday. We will need to know whether your child will need a school lunch that day or will be bringing a completely disposable lunch from home. There is also information regarding chaperones.

A big thank you to Charlene Hosseini, Mary Hind, and Sharon Cannella for providing several fun activities for our earth day celebration last week!

As I mentioned last week, our reading, writing, and math are all interwoven around our science study of the ocean and its inhabitants. One of the most exciting parts of this unit are the dissections that the children participate in with upper division science teacher, Lisa Peck. We are so fortunate to have her partner with us to bring these exciting learning opportunities to our first graders. Last week, she brought squids to dissect. In reflecting after the dissection, the children were excited not only about touching and seeing the insides of the squid, but using ink from the ink sac to write with toothpicks!

Writing with ink from the ink sac of the squid!

Tomorrow Mrs. Peck is bringing sea urchins and starfish to dissect with our students. On May 16, she will bring our favorite... dogfish sharks! This is always a highlight in our unit! We can't wait! Let me know if you would like to join us for any of these exciting learning opportunities! This week we will also begin to learn about the mammals of the sea, particularly the whales! We will be reading and researching about these gentle giants of the sea, writing about them, observing them in video, comparing their sizes during math, and exploring many attributes about them. On Thursday, we will experiment to see how their blubber helps them in the cold oceans of the world.

Several of the children have begun bringing in pictures and research they have found on their chosen sea creature. They are excited about this project. While the projects will be completed at school, they are allowed to also do research at home, find pictures, and begin thinking about how they want to construct their project and bring in materials that may help them in constructing their projects. If you have questions, please let me know.

Matthew and Carson research sharks at the computer.
Please remember to read the homework calendar carefully. Each week the new words on your child's ocean word ring will be vocabulary for the main sea creature that focused on that week. This week our vocabulary words will help us as we read and write about whales. Please be sure to practice the words daily with your child, reading them, spelling them, and understanding their meaning.

This week our word work focus will be on words with the vowel digraphs aw as in claw and ew as in new. Vowel digraphs are combinations of vowels that make a single vowel sound. We'll also continue to review other spelling rules we have learned this year. Remember, as always, the spelling assessment will be on our word work focus of the week as well as our vocabulary words (ocean word ring words). It is always an application assessment.
Avery works on making words during word work time last week.
In math, we will continue to learn about fractions as we compare fractions and introduce the idea that fractional parts of a whole have many names (equivalent fractions). We'll plan to take the unit 8 assessment on Friday so look for it to come home early next week.

There are a lot of dates coming up for some special events, so please note these on your calendars:

Shorecrest's Fifth Annual Daddy-Daughter Dance is just around the corner! This memorable affair ia designed for girls in kindergarten through fourth grade. It offers up a DJ, games, prizes, a photo booth, dancing, a dessert bar, and refreshments for all those who love dressing fancy and hula hooping the night away! It will be held Friday, May 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. in the Shorecrest Athletic Center. You can register for this FUNdraiser (all proceeds benefit Shorecrest Parent Association initiatives) online by visiting shorecrestgala.com . Just click on the "Shop Items" link. Admission is $65 for each daddy/daughter pair and $75 for more than one daughter. Check out photos from last year by visiting http://shorecrest4dd.shutterfly.com

The children have made t-shirts to wear along with jean shorts, skirts, or skorts. We are rehearsing hard to make it a great show! Please continue to practice your child's speaking part at home. Another big thank you to Mary Hind, Kim Gross, Sharon Cannella, Charlene Hosseini, and Beth Rauman for helping us design and paint our t-shirts for the program! We are going to look great on stage!

Week of April 22, 2013

Dear Parents:

What a wonderful week we had Celebrating the Arts last week! We had a wonderful docent on our trip to the Dali Museum who helped us learn so much about the artist, Dali. The drumming experience on Tuesday was a blast! Each child and teacher had a drum. It was amazing how the children were able to repeat the various drum cadences. We also got to do a little dancing to the drums! We also really enjoyed the rock group on Thursday during music. Then on Friday, we enjoyed some time learning to dance a little hip hop and then had Carson's uncle, Mark Gonzalez share his amazing artwork and love of art.  Each child received their own piece of art from him as a gift! Mr. Gonzalez shared his ABC of art... always be creating! The performance under the trees was fantastic! Sitting on our blankets, listening to the wonderful songs, and feeling the breeze in the air made for a delightful end to a perfect week! If you have any pictures to share, please do so! I have begun an album on our shutterfly site.

The countdown has begun to our next BIG show... Commotion in the Ocean! We have a lot of preparing still to do! The children and I have been working hard practicing our songs, learning dances, and practicing poems. I am also sending home a speaking part for your child to learn.  Please help your child practice saying their part with great expression and voice projection - a BIG voice! Please practice daily!

In addition to practicing for our program, we are learning a lot about the ocean and its inhabitants! Reading, writing, and science are all woven around the ocean for the next several weeks. Please read the homework calendar carefully as there are some changes now. Each week the new words  on your child's ocean word ring will be vocabulary for the main sea creature that we will focus on that week. This week our main focus will be on sharks. Please be sure to practice the words daily with your child. The children need to be able to read them, spell them, and know their meaning. This will help in their understanding when both reading and writing about sharks. In both reading and writing workshop, our main focus is non-fiction. We know that non-fiction books are books that teach us about something. We are reviewing the features of non-fiction texts and using them to help us find information and learn. The children will have the opportunity to read about sharks and many other sea creatures. We continue to practice using the many reading strategies and comprehension strategies that we have been working on throughout the year.

In science this week, we will focus on sharks! This is always a favorite ocean creature to learn about! In May, Lisa Peck will be bringing dogfish sharks to dissect with us! But, before we dissect sharks, we'll have a couple of other dissections. We begin this Friday when Lisa will be bringing squids to dissect with us! Then, next Tuesday, April 30, we'll dissect sea urchins and starfish. We are so lucky to have Mrs. Peck share these experiences with us! I dare say I don't know of another school that gets to have these kinds of experiences in first grade! The children will also spend time researching their chosen ocean animal. They are using both books and the internet. At the end of our ocean unit, each child will have created a project on their animal and written an All About book during writing workshop on it. They'll be teaching the class all about their ocean animal, sharing their projects and books with other classes, and sharing them with you! As the time gets near, you will receive an invitation to come to our project share!

In Math, we have been working on counting up as a strategy for making change. This is tricky. Please work on this with your child at home. Play a shopping game where you are shopping and your child is the store clerk. You can use the grocery store ads or just make up shopping number stories to help them practice counting up to make change. We'll also begin to learn about fractions this week as we talk about equal shares. We will divide objects and shapes into equal parts to build understanding of fractional parts of a whole. We'll also introduce unit fraction notation.

This week our word work focus will be on words with long /a/ sound spelled ai as in rain. We'll also review other spelling rules we have learned this year. Remember, as always, the spelling assessment will be on our word work focus this week as well as our vocabulary words (word ring words). It is always an application assessment.

There are a lot of dates coming up for some special events, so please note these on your calendars!

On Sunday, April 28, Shorecrest is participating in an event called Feeding Children Everywhere. Volunteers are needed from the Shorecrest community to help pack food bags in the new Athletic Center. Week of April 15, 2013

Dear Parents:

Wow! I don't know what to say! Teacher Appreciation Day, or week as it turned out, was absolutely the BEST ever! I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciated EVERYTHING! The breakfast each morning was such a wonderful way to begin the day. The flowers were absolutely gorgeous and I am STILL enjoying them at home! The fruit and snack tub was unbelievable! I LOVE everything in it... YUM, YUM! Then, lunch each day was an absolute blessing... not to have to worry about packing a lunch each day! It was so nice to have that to look forward to! (Now, I just need to get myself in gear and exercise more!) As if all of that wasn't enough... the book made with the cards from the children was so very special. When I was able to sit down and read it, I had "happy" tears. Thank you ALL so much for such a wonderful WEEK! You went way beyond making me feel appreciated!

Last Friday, we celebrated two birthdays! Daven and Sydney both turned 7! Happy Birthday Daven and Sydney!

It's Celebrate the Arts Week! We began the week with a field trip to the Dali Museum today! Our class had a wonderful docent, Vanessa Reed. We learned so much from her and had so much fun! Mary Hind took some pictures so I will add some when I get them! (Mary, maybe you could add them to our Shutterfly site, too!) Tomorrow morning we have a drummer coming and on Thursday, we'll be entertained by a rock band! The Arts Teach-in will be on Friday. First, our class has a dancer/movement guest artist and then Carson's uncle, Mark Gonzalez, will be our second guest artist! At 11:00, you are invited to a musical program performed by the students. Following that we'll have a picnic lunch. Bring a blanket and pack yourself a picnic lunch to enjoy with your child! After lunch, we'll take an art walk to view artwork of students from alpha through high school!

The Upper Division musical takes place this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings.  This morning at Town Meeting we had a fantastic preview of "The Music Man". Box office hours are April 15 - 19 from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Don't miss it! These are always amazing productions!

Now, on to what else is happening in our classroom!

Each child has chosen an ocean animal to research and learn more about. We'll be spending time in reading workshop using what we know and will review about non-fiction to help us research and learn about these creatures. The children will be using this research over the next several weeks to help in writing an "all about" book during writing workshop on their chosen ocean animal. They will also be creating a project on the animal and then teaching the class about their animal. At the end of the unit, we'll be having a project share with other classes and inviting parents to a project share!

We are now into our ocean unit in science! This week, we will focus on sea turtles as we learn about the different kinds of sea turtles, their life cycle, habitats, and the difference between sea and land turtles. We have several dissections coming up that the children are very excited about! On April 26, we will be dissecting squids, on April 30, we'll dissect sea urchins and starfish, and then on May 16, we'll dissect dogfish sharks! So exciting!

In math, we continue to work on place value for the 100s, 10, and 1s, counting and exchanging money, and learning to make change!

This week our word work focus will be on words with the vowel dipthong oi (as in coin)  and the variant vowel oo (as in tool).

Week of April 8, 2013

Dear Parents:

Relay for Life last week was a great experience! Thank you so much for your participation!
So proud of the chain for Relay that we made because of the donations from the children!
Taking our chain with us to the athletic center for the opening ceremony for Relay for Life!
Here we are at the opening ceremony for Relay for Life!
If you have pictures from Relay to share, please do!

Last week, the children enjoyed using digital cameras during computer lab. The children were paired with partners and we took a scavenger hunt around campus with the cameras. Mrs. Baralt gave them a list of spanish adjectives. They had to find something to take a picture of for each word, i.e. a red flower for "rojos" or a little bug for "pequeno". It was amazing to see how many adjectives they could identify in spanish! Gracias, Senor Zamoff! It was a lot of fun! Gracias, Senora Baralt!

Celebrate the Arts Week will be NEXT WEEK, April 15 - 19. We begin the week on Monday, April 15, with a field trip to the Dali Museum! There has been a time change! Week of April 1, 2013

Dear Parents:
Ryan did a great job leading Town Meeting this morning with Senor Zamoff!
Relay for Life is this week! Don't forget that the children may wear purple shirts all week! They will still need to wear uniform bottoms. On Friday, we will commence Relay at an all school assembly kick off at 9:00 a.m. on Friday, April 5. After an all school ceremony/celebration, we'll take a lap around the track with the whole school and the students will also walk the track with their PE class that day. That evening the entire football field and track will be filled with booths, fun activities, and supporters walking the track to fight cancer! If you haven't been before, please join us. It's a wonderful experience! Our classroom purple-linked chain is growing and will be added to the chains from all of the other classes to be displayed around the track at Relay for Life.

To celebrate the start of the Rays season, children are allowed to wear Tampa Bay Rays shirts tomorrow (Tuesday) rather than purple shirts if they choose to.

On Thursday, we have a field trip to All Children's Hospital to enjoy their musical production called "What's So Good About Feeling Bad?" It's a fantastic, fun, and educational show about the human body with doctors, nurses, and hospital staff as the actors/singers! We will not be eating lunch until about 12:30 when we return to school, so PLEASE make sure that your child eats a good breakfast that morning and brings a snack to have at school before we leave on the trip! Thank you! Children are allowed to wear purple shirts with uniform bottoms on the field trip.

We enjoyed playing Sight Word Bingo last week with jelly bean markers!

Word Work: This week we are working on words with y as a vowel making the long e sound. When y is at the end of a word it makes either the long e or long i sound. When y is at the beginning of a word, it makes the "y" sound.  Ask your child about the story we learned today to help us remember!

Reading Workshop: We have completed our unit on getting to know the characters in our books. This week we are revisiting tricky word strategies, practicing fluency, and reading with appropriate voice inflection.

Writing Workshop: We continue in our revision unit as we work on revising leads while revisiting some texts that we have read before to help us focus on the leads the authors used. We'll also work on showing not telling. If an author says, "I was happy," that is telling. If an author writes, "I skipped all the way home, humming happy songs as if my heart would burst," that's showing.

Avery looks for ways to revise his writing to make it better!
Kaja adds details to her writing.
Keith and Carson work together to plan revision of their writing.
After working with her partner, Kate adds to her story using her special green revision pen!
Sydney shares the start of her story as she and Natalie work on revising leads.
Matthew and Ben help each other revise their leads to make them stronger.
Leni listens to Phoebe read her story.
Sydney enjoys writing workshop time!
Cyrus listens to Ryan's story as they work together to plan revision.
Kaja and Daven work together to revise their stories.
Keith works hard on his story.
Math: We took the Unit 7 math assessment today. Look for it to be coming home. We'll begin unit 8 tomorrow. In this unit, we will be reviewing counting and exchanging coins, counting money including dollars, writing in dollar and cent notation, facilitating the use of money to explore place-value,  extending place-value concepts to hundreds, and practicing solving both addition and subtraction number stories.
Make My Design was a fun activity the children enjoyed during math explorations last Thursday.
Natalie tries to recreate Avery's design by listening and following the directions he gives her.
We had fun as we practiced telling time with our new BIG clock on Thursday!
Social Studies: We give a big thank you to John Schiaparelli for bringing his powerful telescope so we could observe the bald eagle nesting on the Florida Power field.

At the end of the week, the children will be bringing home books they created during our America unit. Celebrate all that your child learned and the hard work put into this wonderful project!

Kate transformed herself into the Statue of Liberty at home this weekend!
Science: We are learning more about the state of Florida. This week we focus on state symbols such as the bird - mockingbird; tree - sabal palm; marine mammal - manatee; and flower - orange blossom. We'll also learn how Florida got its name as we learn a little about the discovery of Florida by Ponce de Leon. We'll enjoy using the ipads again as we continue our research to find more interesting information about our great state!
